The Focus on Research program is a great opportunity for advocates attending the ASCO Annual Meeting for the first time, as well as those who want to build their knowledge and skills to become a stronger advocate for cancer research. The training program is open to a limited number of advocates. The Focus on Research program includes exciting discussions about concepts in oncology research and how research results progress to better patient care. The Focus on Research program is designed to prepare advocates to better understand the research process and have a greater understanding of common concepts in oncology (cancer pathways, genomics, biomarkers, statistics, patient protections). Scholars will develop and implement an action plan to disseminate research results and knowledge gained in the class to a patient community. Through a system of preparatory conference calls, virtual classroom (webinars), and learning materials the Scholars will gain critical appraisal skills to better understand research presentations and publications.
Goals: After participating as a Focus on Research Scholar will:
- have a greater understanding of the scientific process;
- gain critical appraisal skills to better understand research presentations and publications;
- be more effective during attendance at scientific meetings;
- have a greater understanding of common concepts in oncology (targeted therapies, quality of life and patient reported outcomes, genomics, biomarkers, statistics, patient protections);
- gain confidence and be more effective in research advocacy
