Knowledge about health equity is not the same as knowledge about how to communicate about health equity. And communication is the mightiest tool in a Research Advocate's toolkit. 

Like in all workforces, when the field is not diverse, communication that addresses issues that matter to diverse audiences are more likely to be overlooked. There is an equity gap in the representation of advocates of color. And the lack of diversity of advocates is contributing to the lack of patient-centered communication about health equity.

So, what can we do about this? It is critical that we listen to those who work in health equity spaces, then create inclusive, patient-centered communication practices that reach and represent all voices.

Dr. Hauenstein's research interests include examining how our personal identities impact our leadership and advocacy. Her talk will walk participants through a series of activities meant to deepen their understanding of their own socially-constructed identities, create a common language around issues of equity, and set the stage for the Symposium Series on Voices in Health Equity.


Health Equity: Communicating Research to Advance the Public's Health

Dr. Simón will speak about Health Equity from a researcher’s point of view, including both foundational knowledge to help Research Advocates advance their own efforts, as well as provide advice on how patient advocates might contribute to research in the spaces and places they find themselves.


Health Equity: Elevating Cancer Stories and Amplifying Black Voices

Jodi-Ann Burey will speak to the goal of her podcast Series, Black Cancer, and that is how to normalize tough conversations on cancer and center the cancer narratives of people of color as told by people of color. She’ll also address how she uses multiple forms of media (she is a public speaker, writer and podcast host) to advance her health equity mission. Ms. Burey will also speak to her newest project that focuses on supporting patients of color, and their healthcare providers towards leveling racial health disparities. Health Equity: Optimizing Interpersonal Communication to Reduce Health Disparities

Visiting Professor in the Center for Communication & Health in the Department of Communication Studies at Northwestern University

Dr. Pusetari’s research interests lie at the intersection of interpersonal communication and health communication, as well as understanding the impact of communication technologies on interpersonal relationships. Her talk will connect these interrelated communication theories to the practice of advancing patient centered research by offering insights into skills, tactics, and tools for broadening the diversity of patient voices represented in research projects.
